Shajahan Mohideen, aka Shaj, is part of the back bone of Pride Racing having worked for us for a solid ten years. He’s well known around Warwick Farm for his dedication to Joe and has a smile on his face whatever the weather! Born and bred in India, Shaj has been around horses for as long as he can remember with his uncle being a racehorse trainer. At the age of 16 Shaj found himself looking up to top Indian jockey, Aslam Kader, as he started race riding which he did for around ten years before moving to the UK and then Sydney where he worked for Gai Waterhouse as a track work rider in Randwick.

After working for Gai, Shaj made the move to Warwick Farm where he did a couple of years with Marc Conners before joining Pride Racing in 2008 where he had the pleasure of riding DE LIGHTNING RIDGE at track work and caring for her throughout her career with us. He reminisces on the time the mare achieved fame as the fastest horse ever at Randwick Racecourse when she broke ZEPHYR BAY’S 35 year old track record when winning the 2010 AJC Challenge Stakes Gr 2 in 55.92 seconds, becoming the first horse to break 56 seconds for 1000 metres at Royal Randwick. Another of Shaj’s career highlights would be riding BALL OF MUSCLE at track work and seeing him win the Group 2 QTC Cup in Doomben before placing second in the Group 1 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley.

At this current moment, BALL OF MUSCLE would be Shaj’s favourite horse in the stable as he looks forward to his preparation ahead. Despite not riding track work anymore Shaj still says BALL OF MUSCLE holds a special place in his heart and is keen to see him do well again this time around. Looking ahead Shaj feels SNITZEL colt, DRIFTER, is one to watch after he caught his eye soon after arriving.

Shaj admires the way Joe handles his horses and works alongside his staff in the mornings, he says he’s a good role model and inspires him to be a key member of the team and work hard no matter what else is going on in life.
Humble and dedicated, Shaj truly is part of the back bone of Pride Racing. He shines through as an individual that stays calm no matter the circumstances which he admits is down to his many years of experience within the racing industry. His passion and care for the horses is second to none as he turns up every day rain or shine, making him a great leader and role model to the rest of the team.

We’re truly lucky to have Shaj as a key member of our team here at Pride Racing and cannot thank him enough for his hard work.
